Bergenstesten (Test i norsk (higher level)) is the Norwegian language exam required for admission to Norwegian universities for non-native speakers. Bergenstesten (Test i norsk (higher level)) is equivalent to C1 on the CEFR scale and is required by most Norwegian universities for admission without additional language testing. It tests written and oral Norwegian in academic contexts. Norskprøven (Norwegian Language Test) covers A1 through C1 in reading, writing, listening, and speaking and is used for residency and citizenship applications as well as some educational admissions. Norskprøven at B2 is the common threshold for upper secondary education. For international students, Bergenstesten is the relevant academic certification.
Norwegian universities have low tuition costs (free at public universities) and attract increasing numbers of international students. Programs taught in Norwegian require Bergenstesten or equivalent. Norwegian has two written standards: Bokmål (used by about 85% of Norwegians) and Nynorsk (used in western Norway and taught in all schools). Academic Norwegian and Bergenstesten use Bokmål as the primary standard. Norwegian spoken dialects vary significantly across regions. For academic and examination purposes, standard Bokmål is the relevant register.
